Getting started

EXE

The precompiled executable is available for download on the github repo

Python Install

If you choose to run the interpreted code through python, you can pull the source code from the github repo, install module requirements (PyQt5, Qscintilla, QtAwesome, and Pyperclip) by changing to the source folder and running:

pip3 install -r requirements.txt

Once the requirements are installed, you can run JSONitor through Python 3 from the source folder.

python3 JSONitor.py

The application window should appear.

Untested on other platforms

Usage

JSONitor has many functions of a regular text editor, but also features a tree view which can be edited and transferred back to JSON in the text view.

Tree View Basics

Right-click to access the Tree View context menu Double-click to edit an item

Click the left-pointing arrow at top middle of the window to update the Text View based upon the Tree View

Text View Basics

AutoSyntax (on by default) will add braces, brackets and quotes for you

Click the right-pointing arrow at top middle of the window to update the Tree View based upon the Text View

Auto Update Tree View

Click the cycle icon at top middle of the window to enable Auto Updating of Text and Tree Views (note that this process may be slow for large files when typing in Text View)

Find and Edit

FindAndEdit

Press Ctrl+F to focus the find bar

Start typing to find entries in the Text View

Note that non-alphanumeric or whitespace characters will be ignored unless the search is valid regex.

Press Enter to find the next match

Press Ctrl+Shift+F to select all matches in the Text View

Press Ctrl+Enter to focus the Text View

Bookmarks and Tabs

Tabs may be accessed specifically using Ctrl+(0-9)

Tabs may by cycled using Ctrl+Tab

Tabs may be navigated using Ctrl+(PageUp, PageDown)

Bookmarks may be set using Ctrl+Shift+(0-9)

Bookmarks may be accessed using Alt+(0-9)

Text Formating Options

Click the buttons or use the JSON menu to format your text to compact, pretty-printed, or sorted

Auto Update and Undo

Undos and Redos stack per tab based upon updates from JSONitor actions

Auto Syntax and Settings

Press Ctrl+, to open the JSONSettings.json file

Make a change and save the file to update your settings

Note that the file must be valid JSON

Go to Line

Press Ctrl+G to open a dialog to go to a line

Close Tab and Reopen Tab

Press Ctrl+W to close a tab

Press Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen closed tabs

Path Bar Save

Type in the Path Bar (the filepath at the top of the window) and press Ctrl+S to save the file as the newly typed filepath

Type in the Path Bar (the filepath at the top of the window) and press Enter to open the file at the newly typed filepath if it exists or save the current file if it does not

The log file, created in whichever folder JSONitor is run from, provides information about JSONitor processes.

Basic Troubleshooting

For a fresh run, you may try deleting the JSONitorSetting.json and JSONitorHistory.json files, and running again.
